Fernando Zóbel (Manila, 1924, Rome, 1984) was a painter, collector and founder of the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, inaugurated in 1966 in the Casas Colgadas. It was the first public space for contemporary art in Spain.
Born into a Spanish family in the Philippines, he studied at Harvard and settled in Spain in the late 1950s. In 1980 he donated his collection to the Fundación Juan March, which has managed the museum in Cuenca ever since. The Museo del Prado dedicated the exhibition “Zóbel. El futuro del pasado” to him in 2022 and 2023.
His work connects pictorial tradition and contemporary abstraction, and is present in institutional collections in Spain, the Philippines and the United States.
